Thanga Meenkal is the second offering from director Ram, whose debut movie was Kattradhu Tamil. Kattradhu Tamil was a critically acclaimed movie but did not do well in the box office. Ram has come up with Thanga Meenkal and the interesting thing is that he has played the lead role in the movie himself. Thanga Meenkal also has director Gautham Vasudev Menon as one of the producers of the movie, which is heavily promoted as a poetic take of a father – daughter relationship. Poetry can involve melodrama, but who can stand too much of it?
Kalyani (Ram) finds it tough to make money with his profession as a silverware polisher. He is a school dropout and his marriage life with Vadivu is also not very happy. However, the world becomes different for him when he is with his nine year old daughter Chellamma (Sadhana). Kalyani does everything he could to satisfy the wishes of his daughter. He manages to find money that he could not afford to join her daughter in a prestigious school, which fails to find that Chellamma is dyslexic. Kalyani, who is happy in his own world with Chellamma, is unable to manage the hard realities of the life. Can he protect the beautiful relationship with his daughter with all the sufferings of his life?
It may not be sensible to compare to a director’s recent movie with his previous one, but it might make sense to compare Thanga Meenkal with Kaatradhu Tamil. The characterization of the lead role appears to be the same in both the movies, where the protagonist lives in his world but suffers in the reality of life. The female leads (in Thanga Meenkal it is the nine year old character Chellamma) in both the movies feel better when the protagonist is around them.
In both the movies there are some poetic scenes that show the potential of the director Ram, but at the same time, the movies have some weakest sequences that can negate all the good efforts of the director. Especially in Thanga Meenkal, the director using his movie as a medium to criticize the schooling system is very dud.
Overall, Thanga Meenkal is poetic and too much melodrama can hurt many audiences!
