Manjapai is a comedy drama film by N.Ragavan. The cast of the film include Vimal, Lakshmi Menon and Rajkiran in leading roles. Masani has done the cinematography of the film and the music is scored by N. R. Raghunathan. The movie is made with a social note to make the viewer’s realize the cold-heartedness of the busy city dwellers. The film deals with an interesting topic and could have done much more than its present performance, which is quite depressing as per the critics.
Manjapai, in Tamil signifies the cloth bag villagers carry with them while travelling. In the movie Venkatasamy played by Raj Kiran is the Manjapai, who reaches the Chennai city apartment of his beloved grandson Tamizh played by Vemal to stay for few months. Tamizh is a software engineer with a highly-paid job and so called sophisticated life, and he is a lot excited to get a chance to go for an offshore project.
Tamizh had lost his parents in childhood and have been brought up in a small village by his grandfather Venkatasamy. When Tamizh got the offer for the offshore project he invited his beloved granddad to stay a few days with him before he leaves for the foreign land. When Venkatasamy comes to the town to stay with Tamizh, he is infuriated by the activities of Tamizh’s neighbors and also Tamizh’s girlfriend Karthika, played by Lakshmi Menon. The next part of the movie is all about how Tamizh maintains peace and keeps everyone happy, including his much adored grandfather, girlfriend and neighbors.
The movie has tried to picture the self-centered and often callus attitude of the people living in the city. It has also tried to portray the differences in views between people of villages and cities. However, the presentation does not go as good as it is required to deal with such a topic, and some flaws are quite evident. However, if you are planning to watch a comedy drama this weekend, you might give it a shot.
