Irrational commercial masala movies, or to put it in a nice way, ‘Mass entertainers‘ occupied the screens of Tamil cinema industry and the minds of Tamil cinema fans earlier. Of late, less or no intellectual sequences filled cinema in the name of so called ‘comedies’ is doing the same job. However, a cinema has to show characters and replicate the real life occurrences in a sensible yet entertaining way thus making worth the money that the audiences pay to watch it on screens. Fortunately, Tamil cinema has some none suffocating but less room for such a cinema. Pannaiyarum Padminiyum comes as one such cinema, which everyone can go watch and enjoy.
Directed by debutant director S U Arum Kumar, Pannaiyarum Padminium has it all in its name. The movie is all about a landlord (Jaya Prakash) and a car of Padmini brand, which is left in his care. Since he does not know how to drive a car, he hires a driver called Murugesan (Vijay Sethupathi) and spends most of his time with the Padmini. His kind nature allows him to offer the car for all purposes in his villages and thus the Padmini becomes a lovable and adorable thing for the entire village. However, when the time comes for the landlord to return Padmini to his owner, he is unable to handle it. What happens next?
A good director first has to be a good story teller and debutant director S U Arun Kumar seems to have learnt this fact. He has extended his short film into a feature film without any hassles. The best part about Pannaiyarum Padminiyum is that the movie moves at a languid pace and each scene has been shot with care.
The characterization of the movie is another plus. Except the character of landlord’s daughter all other characters have been etched positively and add feel good factor to the movie every now and then. The only minus could be that one who is used to brisk pace of movies might find this one some ten or fifteen minutes longer than necessary.
Overall, Pannaiyarum Padminiyum will lighten your heart with its feel good factor and interesting characterization.
