Naiyaandi is one of the latest flicks to hit the screens in Tamil cinema for this weekend. Naiyaandi is promoted as a village based comedy, which is the genre that marked the entry of director Sargunam into Tamil cinema with the movie Kalavani adding up to his credits. Actor Dhanush and actress Nazriya Nazim have played the lead roles in the movie along with actors Sathyan, Soori and so on. Naiyaandi, however, does not stand up to its title which in Tamil means a laugh riot. It offers you a bit of laughter but nothing more than that.
Chinna Vandu (Dhanush) has two elder brothers who have very bad luck with their marriages. Chinna Vandu meets Vana Roja (Nazriya Nazim) when she comes to her grandmother’s home in Dhanush’s village for a carnival. After a few meetings, both fall in love with each other. However, Dhanush has to convince his two elder brothers, which seems to be a daunting task. In addition, there is also a goon in the village who comes after Vana Roja. What happens next forms the rest of the story.
Sargunam attempts to narrate the things in an animated and comic way. This approach works at times but fails at most of the times. The first half introduces the lead actors in a comic way but fails to keep the audiences engaged through out until the interval time.
In the second half, the director tries to induce more comedy with the help of comedy actors like Soori and Sathyan but you do not laugh sensibly, which might be a disappointment for some audiences. Actor Dhanush has done his character well, but the role does not offer the good actor a scope to showcase his true potential. Nazriya impresses in her less than expected screen presence.
Overall, Naiyaandi has nothing to offer new and is not a laugh riot either!
