Recently, colleges in Tamil Nadu were closed due to the student protests that came in support to the Tamil people living in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan Tamils were tortured and suffered because of war crimes committed by the Sri Lankan army and hence the Tamil people in Tamil Nadu came for their support. It is a usual thing that Cinema community comes to the support of such important issues faced by Tamil people all over the world. This time too, the South Indian Film Artiste’s Association organized a one day hunger strike to lend their voices in support to the Lankan Tamils.
Many big names in the industry participated in the hunger strike. Stalwart actors like Super Star Rajnikanth and Ulaga Nayagan Kamal Hassan too participated in the strike. Actor R Sarath Kumar, president of the association, lead from the front. Actors like Ajith and Surya too participated in the strike and cancelled all their cinema commitments. The actors demanded the central government to amend the resolution and press the UNO for a separate country, Tamil Ezham, for the Tamils in Sri Lanka.
Young actors like Vishal, Arya, Karthi and Dhanush too were present for the one day strike, which also saw many directors and other film fraternities come together. Earlier, a couple of weeks back, actor Simbu made news by joining student protests in Chennai and lending voice in support of Lankan Tamils.
Actor Vijay, however, was not present for the hunger strike. It seems the actor is busy struck with the work for Thalaiva, for which he has gone for Australia to film a few sequences. The actor, however, sent a letter to the concerned heads lending his support and regretting his critical situation of not being able to participate. It seems the actor would organize a separate hunger strike with his Makkal Iyakkam group.
