Director Prabhu Solomon has already the credit of making Mynaa, which became a successful movie in terms of both recognition and box office collection. With Sivaji Ganesan’s grandson and actor Prabhu’s son, Vikram Prabhu, joining him to play the lead role and director N Lingusamy producing the flick, Prabhu Solomon’s Kumki had expectations right from its inception. In addition to all these things, the title Kumki too was very tentative and tells the theme of the story in one word. The director Prabhu Solomon has not disappointed any one, and has done justice to the theme he has taken in Kumki!
Here is the plot of the Kumki. Bomman (Vikram Prabhu) is an elephant mahout and earns a living using his elephant called Manickam in temples and movie shootings. He is always assisted by his uncle (Thambi Ramaiah) who is a drunkard and always causes a mess to Bomman. The duo ends up in a village due to certain circumstances, where the village people are in need of Bomman’s elephant Manickam for their harvesting. However, Bomman has his own reasons to stay in the village after seeing Alli (Lakshmi Menon). What happens to his love for Alli and what happens with Manickam is told by Kumki.
Kumki moves at a careful speed. There are no rushes and the director remains very careful in opening up the plot slowly but steadily. The first half of the movie is effectively built with all the elements that would entertain the audiences going parallel with the plot. However, this slow pace becomes a bit of problem in the second half, as a few impatient audiences may be tested by the narration. Despite this small flaw, Kumki manages to make the audiences stick to the plot, thanks to a dramatic climax.
Debutant actor Vikram Prabhu has worked hard for this movie, and it gets clearly reflected on screen. His acting skills are well exploited by the director in the climax sequences. Actor Thambi Ramaiah too pulls off a good performance. D Imman’s music is a big plus for Kumki.
Overall, Kumki has some unique elements, and yes, you have to watch this good flick!
